Mission of NES Library:
Northern Elementary School Library’s mission is to foster a love for reading by providing a welcoming space filled with diverse, engaging, and age-appropriate books that inspire curiosity and imagination. We are committed to offering a carefully curated collection that reflects the interests and needs of our school community. Through our library, we aim to support lifelong learning and encourage all students to explore the joy and power of reading.
Reading or being read to for 20 to 30 minutes each night has a powerful impact on elementary-aged children’s academic and emotional development. Research shows that children who read daily are exposed to up to 1.8 million more words per year than those who don’t, significantly boosting their vocabulary, comprehension, and overall literacy skills. According to the National Education Association, reading regularly at home is one of the strongest predictors of future academic success. Creating a daily routine of reading not only strengthens literacy but also creates warm, lasting memories around the joy of books.

What if a Book is Lost or Damaged?
If a book is damaged, please send it back to school with a note. (Please don't try to repair the book yourself. We use special mending materials) Sometimes the book can be repaired. If the book cannot be repaired so that it can go back in the collection and be checked out again, you will receive a notice indicating the cost you will need to help pay to replace the book.
If a book is lost, I typically ask students and families to continue looking for the book in the classroom, at home, after-school care, the bus, etc. I will also look for the book in the library. The book will remain on the student's "book account" until the item is found, or, if it is not found by the end of the year, you will receive a notice indicating the cost you will need to pay to help replace the book
